Detangling Black and African American
Hair
The best way to detangle natural black and African
American hair is to do it when it is wet. When the
hair is wet, you decrease the friction between the
hair strands and the work of detangling is much
much easier. You can detangle hair while you are
washing it, or in between washes.
Here are three tips for detangling natural black and African American hair.
1. To detangle your hair while washing, use Northwest Scents Detangling and Cleansing Cream. This is a special product which we have developed to help detangle black and afro textured hair. You use it to wash and to detangle your hair at the same time. To use it, you need to wet your hair thoroughly, and divide it into sections. While your hair is wet, gently massage Northwest Scents Detangling and Cleansing Cream through each section of hair, and then comb through the section of hair (gently) using a wide tooth comb beginning at the ends, and working your way down to the roots. Rinse well, and repeat for each section of hair. For best results, seal the moisture into your hair by applying Northwest Scents Hair Conditioner to each section. Gently comb the conditioner through each section of your hair using a wide tooth comb, and then let the conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes to soften your hair and seal in moisture. Rinse your hair to remove excess conditioner, and let air dry, or gently blot dry with a towel.
2. To detangle natural black hair in between washes you will need the following:
* a wide tooth comb
* a bottle of moisturizing conditioner (we recommend Northwest Scents™ hair conditioner which is made with coconut oil and lots of moisturizers)
* a clean spray bottle (one that has not been used for anything else) filled with warm water.
Work on the hair in sections. For each section, gently mist the hair with the spray bottle until it is damp. Then apply some hair conditioner to the hair. Then gently comb the hair using your wide tooth comb, beginning at the ends, and working your way down to the roots. When you are finished, style the hair, and then blot the hair dry to remove excess conditioner and water. Let the hair dry, or use a blow dryer to dry the hair with hot air.
3. To maintain your hair in a detangled state in between washes, you should loosely braid it each night before sleeping (if it isn't braided or locked). Also wear some sort of sleep cap to protect your hair at night. And apply a small amount of hair oil frequently (daily or every other day) to your hair to help retain moisture in your hair in between washes.
